Sweet Spot Cafe - Whitewater, Wi
Built in 1894 after the original hotel on site burned down, The Whitewater Hotel was home to many travelers from the railroad just across the street. It served Whitewater for quite a few years but like most things during the Great Depression, business declined and kept declining after World War II. But the demise of it came in 1952 when the passenger service ended in Whitewater. After that, the hotel became a rooming house and also was home to a local bar called Packy’s Bar. Everyone knew the bartender, Ruby and still think she’s hanging out in the building today.
The building did sit vacant for years...suffering lack of maintenance, some inappropriate remodeling and a fire, it was slated to be demolished. But around 2006, the city somehow enticed a developer enough to renovate the building and saved it from the wrecking ball. And today it is an amazing cafe and coffee shop along with home to the few apartments above.
